There are many reasons why it is important to train our pets especially dogs. Just because I am particularly fond of Boxer dogs, training that is spoken about on this site applies to all dogs.

Training often time begins with that of potty training. Teaching one’s dog where it is acceptable to relieve himself. Another common problem that starts from puppy hood is that of chewing, biting, and other problematic behaviors such as jumping up on people.

Many times people will discard their dog due to some type of unwanted behavioral problem instead of taking the time and making an effort to train their dog to understand how to behave property.

In fact my husband and I were able to adopt the most wonderful dog in the world, whose name was, “Tyler”, because the previous owners got tired of him chewing on items in their house such as chair legs and the carpet. Surprisingly enough the owners never thought to purchase an assortment of chew toys for Tyler during his puppy years when chewing is simply a natural thing that dogs do, especially when they are puppies.

Over the years there have been many different dog training techniques developed over time. They have become gentler and more dog friendly. Less yelling, screaming, and basically terrorizing dogs into behaving. I know that’s a bit harsh, but hey, I just happen to be one of those people’s who adore all living creatures, and have come to experience great joy in owning a wide variety of them. So, I’m a little prejudiced, or rather protective, of their feelings.

Tyler was one of those kinds of dogs they didn’t really even need to be trained, he just seemed to know what we expected of him. She was such a smart dog, loving dog. Although he did go through a period of time where my son had to make sure all of his toys were picked up and put away or they would end up in pieces all over the floor. We did not actually considered this a bad thing, because it taught our son, to be neat and tidy, without us actually having to ever train him to do it ourselves.

So to answer the question as to why dog training is so important, it is because a well trained dog will be loved and cherished and provide many years of friendship and joy to all who come to know him or her. On the other hand, dogs that are not trained can develop unwanted behaviors that bring stress as well as other more serious problems into the lives of their human companions.

This is illustrated by someone I knew who had to live temporarily with her parents. She brought along her two dogs. While she never had any problems in Alaska, where her home is, problems with her dog started almost immediately when she moved in with her parents.

When she tried walking her dogs down the street she would have to cross and walk on the other side of the road any time someone else was out walking their dog. Her dogs were aggressive and out of control. One day when be back eight had become loose the two dogs got out and attacked another neighbor dog. Fortunately the owner was able to rescue his beloved pet from these two attacking dogs. Because of this these two dogs were put to sleep.

There are some dogs that will never require any type of structural training as they seem to naturally understand what their owners want. There are other dogs who need to be trained to understand what good behavior is and what bad behavior is.

To put it bluntly, training can mean the difference between life or death for the dog, in some cases for the safety of other creatures and sadly even people.
