Dog Training Using Callers and Halters
Dog training equipment can be relatively inexpensive when you think about what the proper equipment can do for different types of dog training situations. Let’s consider some of the equipment that is good for basic training of your dog.
Before I go into this further however, I’d like to say this…
There are some collars that are not suitable for all dog breeds and different dog behavioral issues will require different types of dog collars. Do not attempt to use a shock collar or a choke chain before truly getting professional help with this. For one, there is a specific way to place a choke collar on a dogs head. Do it wrong and you can seriously hurt your dog.
Sadly, I pet sat for someone who told me their dog had hung itself while alone with a choke collar on. Yes, very sad, I don’t even like to mention it. However, VERY serious. Do not leave a choke collar on any unattended dog.
Depending on the size of your dog ended difference between the size of your dog and the size of the dog walker a 4 foot lead and a 6 foot lead our good for walking.
Dog collars. There are many different types of dog collars. There is the choke chain as well as a stationary collar that does not flex. The choke chain should only be used after proper instruction is given on how to use it properly. In fact a choke chain really is only to be used under specific situations and certainly best if used by professional.
Dogs with quite long hair can you come problematic when using the choke chain. There are several different types of collars but can be used for dog walking. It is best to seek the help of someone familiar with what each different type of caller can do before making your purchase.
There is also dog collar that’s referred to as the “come along”or “head halter”. This type of caller is placed over the dogs muscle as well as its neck in order to control and prevent the dog from pulling or dragging the owner during the walk. However I personally do not like this type of caller. Why? Because it never really teaches the dog how to walk on a leash properly. It’s sort of the lazy way of handling a problem it would be better handled with proper training
Now that is just my own personal opinion. These types of halters are actually very effective in keeping your dog by your side in the healing position. Most dogs read the dislike having something put on their muscle like this type of halter. Basically what this halter does is teach the dog that walking alongside you on the loose lead is the most comfortable way to walk
However I have to say that dogs will pull so hard on the leash that they gag and choke and cough without ever stopping this behavior because stopping means that will stop gagging and choking. So the fact is what that halter does is it simply makes it impossible for dogs to pull regardless of whether it’s more comfortable not to pull.
